LastOSLinux Mint v22.2 Beta

I have a builder setup ready for the final, I made a basic new theme to work with.

Desktop, Icons and theme, it's inbuilt stuff except the wallpaper which I grabbed out of the 570 wallpapers collection.

I've not been well enough to work on things until yesterday and a bit of the day before.

The builder is updated on github if you want to build your own prior to the public ISO release after Mint 22.2 goes final near the start of next month.

As the Beta is quite able to be updated to the final using the built in updater, I see no reason to wait for a final ISO, it's been rock solid, faster and no issues for me, So as such I've uploaded the New ISO for people to use for any fresh installs they may wish to do.

I'll be uploading the new packages to the LLStore repo and will upload the new Builder Template, I am currently uploading the Manjaro build with the newer packages and fixes and then I'll upload the Final of the Debian 13 ISO, it's been built and tested, the only 2 glitches with it now are it asks for a password to update the repositories on the very first login, once that has occurred it functions properly as auto login. The other issue is because it's debian and not mint it doesn't have a few of the runtimes/libraries required to run all the Games available on the repository out of the box, it'll take me a while to figure out how to get all the missing ones added, but for now, it works as much as it can and I didn't want to delay it any further.

Hopefully it works well for everyone who downloads them, I don't see a reason to upload the Gnome, KDE and XFCE versions - unless someone asks for them as my main focus is Cinnamon and even though LLStore supports them all, I don't have time to work on all of them constantly by myself and I also don't use them myself.

no, 22.1 will update to 22.2 following the mint update page. I only release new builds to make future installs save you time.

Found an issue, the UID of 1001 for the /LastOS/LLStore folder doesn't work in 22.2, it did in 22.1, meaning for LLStore settings to be editable/writable you need to right click and take ownership of it. I'll see what I can do to fix it, but for now to change settings or add manual locations it requires you own the LLStore folder.

This doesn't stop it working, just means it wont save settings or make manual locations possible. But I managed to other folders in /LastOS to be owned by everyone, so I just need to find why the store isn't being set properly.

-EDIT-

NVidia-Driver-575-Open (Recommended) works well now, it had issues in 22.1, but seems ok in 22.2.

-EDIT-

Fixed, I just forced it to be Full Read/Write prior to capturing the squishfs and ISO file

I installed this LastOSLinux issue on an old Macbook 2008 'White' model.

When booting Ventoy drive, it shows for a second that message about 'not a secure boot platform 14' but then the Ventoy menu reliably appears.

Choose grub2 option if the normal mode doesn't boot (as is likely on most or all macs).

Before starting the installation, you need to boot into Mac OS and reduce the mac partition to make space for Linux (unless you decided to do away with mac os altogether). You can't shrink it in this Linux dialog, only delete it.
The first FAT32 EFI partition 'belongs' to Mac OS, I ignore it and make my own for Linux.

Final review of partition setup before actual installing.
As you see, I had previously installed Mint 22.1 on this old Macbook and the same as Glenn had it on his old mac install, I also experienced extra long booting times, even 10-12 minutes long ones (sometimes it was shorter if picking Linux EFI boot partition manually while holding Alt at startup but it didn't always shorten the boot).

Moving ahead, this Mint22.2 reliably starts in 75 seconds from pressing the power button to desktop loading. I wonder if that previous overlong boot time might have been because apparently (as seen in this image) I used that sda1 mac boot partition vs now that I have more experience with installing I make my own linux boot partition.

Installation took a bit over 12 minutes and on first boot you get this generic Ubuntu menu

After first reboot (you may have to disconnect Ventoy disk to avoid booting into its menu). I then plug the disk back before it gets to the desktop but likely it is not like that LastOSLinux needs it to get something out of its iso, I think it couldn't, it is not like when you 'burn' iso to usb device and then it is used for post install installation, here it is all likely downloaded from the internet (just have internet cable plugged in, decidedly you need it for latest updates anyway). For WIFI you need to use USB dongle.

New lease on life for 13" MacBook4,1

I believe I got this Mint 22.2 boot menu on subsequent boots by installing 'custom grub boot menu' from LLStore.
Those two Mac OS choices don't work, just hung up your machine. To boot into mac OS hold Alt key at startup to choose its partition (if you left its partition on disk). If you don't press any key, you always boot into Linux even if you previously booted Mac OS, Linux is the default.

@Glenn Hope this 'use case' fits in here or move it to some other section. I recall now that you said you installed Mint 21 on old macbook for your mother and there was that issue with long startup times, you should then reinstall it with this Mint 22.2 if you didn't do that already.

hmmm, nah I did a OS upgrade, not a Fresh install, and even that was enough to improve the boot times - just so you know ;)

I installed the exact same Laptop for a friend, they had a golf ball clam shell case and a white and purple keyboard overlay for theirs. They've used it every day since and it does the job for them, considering the MacOS it was able to run without OpenCore, it's now able to use a browser for youtube, facebook etc, where safari and anything you could install to OSX, would fail to use TSL2.0 and was limited to TSL 1.2, not enough for modern browsing. His was specced out though, had 16GB ram and a 256gb SSD. Even minecraft ran ok.

Oh and his wifi worked without an issue, I just used the USB one to install the internal ones drivers and away it went.

Just an update, I decided to make a ISO that has all the Linux stuff installed, I left all the WINE side of things off the captured build, anyway, this allows me to quickly install the Apps and Games I want on every install without having to wait for LLStore to install the online Flatpaks and packages etc. This should knock about 50 minutes off per HDD install, then I just have to install the 143 Wine games and the other ssApps/ppApps post install which are all local (no internet required).

I am sharing this so that if anyone wants to do the same because the pick the same presets every install, you can. Simply install LastOSLinux, set it up how you want to, download the builder and put on the desktop and run 02_Build_ISO.sh it'll spit out a bootable/installable ISO for you, if you customise the theme/wallpaper, extensions etc, it'll also keep any changes you like to have done. It may take a little longer to start booting as my ISO was over 6GB, but it worked fine.

Install was 16.2GB, pre the WINE stuff.
