LastOS.org was attacked by hackers - We're back now!

If you have been trying to get to LastOS.org since December 25th (yeah a good xmas present to wake up to), we were DDoS attacked and then they injected gambling sites into the Repositories and LastOSLinux home page. We did what we could to fix it, but they damaged the server beyond recovery, Steve was nice enough to fire up his LastOS.net domain that he had been keeping for a while now. We've managed to make LastOS.org redirect to LastOS.net now, if you could please update your bookmarks to the new site.

We may have a bit more down time in the near future (Jan 26th) as we relocate to a new host, but hopefully it will all go smooth and a page refresh and re-logging in will be all that's needed.

In case you are hosting your own forums, I can not recommend Blue Host (even through things were smooth for 15 years with them), instead of them helping get the site back, they kept saying pay $223 to have SiteGuard for 12 months and then they could help restore a earlier backup and fix things. Now we had already been thinking about moving since they reduced our disk space by quarter and put the price up a LOT more per year. But this was the final nail, if they aren't able to protect our data (and your safety) then they aren't suitable to continue being with.

It'll take some time for the repositories to come back and dead links to be removed, but we are working on things.

I personally have pulled back from promoting LastOSLinux, even though it's going to continue to be made. I hope more of it's users engage with us here as feedback is the only real way to know if we are making a difference and where to focus our time to add or fix things you need in your Linux. I only use Windows less than 5% of the time now, so have no intention of continuing to make new mods, I do however plan to release a new ISO from time to time as I still need to have a Windows 10 LTSC IoT for myself, I am happy to share this once It's ready.

Thanks for your understanding and I hope you all can join in here and make it a place to discuss ideas and share tools/builds etc. It's a lot of work to create whole OS mods, so even if it's just to say thanks or that your happily using it.

I was wondering why the site looked so strange and why “people” were only coming to the forum instead of your site with the downloads, etc.

I'm really happy that it doesn't mean:
“LastOS is dead.”

Best regards,
Tosa

P.S.:
Sorry for my English, but I don't really speak English. I send my German through Deepl. Nevertheless, I'm glad that this possibility now exists in the computer world. It's almost like the universal translator from Star Trek...

Yeah it was a rough few weeks, but we're getting things sorted again. Not sure what the demand will be for Team LastOS's work, but I'll give it one more big push and hopefully it'll be appreciated enough that we could secure the users and support to expand back to a new host. As it is, we don't accept donations as a lot of the work we share we don't own, but if we could get a hand with someone to help hosting it would be greatly appreciated, we no longer keep the files on out hosting, they are external, so we could get by one 30GB of space, but 50GB would be nicer as we'd have enough to keep the backups and major tools mirrored as well.
Steve and I have given many hours a day/night to get everything sorted on top of updating the releases and couldn't really give more than we do, life hasn't been easy for anyone, but I still believe that I can help people save time and solve problems with the tools and knowledge I freely share.

If anyone can help out and is interested in what we're doing, reach out. Only if you see value in what we are trying to achieve. I've been publicly sharing LastOS's since 2006, LastOS.org was about since late 200x's, before that we were working at AppzPoint then SharingIsThePoint. After the hack I had all but given up, but Steve was here, giving his time, effort and skills to get me somewhere to belong. I know he personally doesn't need my OS builds as he learnt all he needed from me many years ago, but he obviously likes my company from time to time or he'd have ran when the hackers took down .org.

Whichever way things go, always remember, New Ideas can only be found at the edges of the rules others place on you. That is why LastOS.org never had rules - other than mutual respect... seem to work 99.9% of the time.

Just awesome.

I absolutely love that you don't ask for donations and still do such a wonderful job...

Apart from the page hack, I hear, read, and feel that it is your calling to share your work and the joy you get from it with others...

Am I interpreting that correctly?

Of course, I'm always happy to help, but very often I'm not very successful because I can't always do what I would like to. There is a reason for this, of course, which I'm not really ready to mention publicly here yet.

I think that now that we are communicating with each other here, it will certainly become clear at some point how I too can give something back to you.

This is my vision of the future. Away from the necessity of money and toward a world in which the greatest thing you can give back to the world or to people is your willingness to do something good...

Phew, I hope Deepl translates this correctly so that the warmth of my words comes across.

Yes, German is a difficult language, they say... But it is also very precise and can even convey feelings. I don't know if AI can convey that?

Best regards

Tosa

P.S.

I upgraded from v22.2 to v22.3 yesterday evening. The only negative thing I noticed was that the boot logo changed from YingYang to the Mint logo. Everything else went smoothly.

Can I actually use any Linux tool to generate an install stick from this – for me – perfect state?

I was aware I replace Linux Mint logo with my own using the Mint Package and an update would replace it, I'll work on making it installable from the LLStore soon and I'll make sure it sticks between OS upgrades in the future.

The tool you need to learn to capture your own OS, is Penguins Eggs https://penguins-eggs.net/ I also have my entire LastOSLInux Builder on: https://github.com/LiveFreeDead?tab=repositories
It's not too complex to learn the basics, pretty much you install the AppImage of Penguins Eggs and then run "sudo eggs produce --clone" this will clone the current OS and the active user, then you can boot to the LiveOS of it and install it to another computer (Or the same one). But for the current system, use TimeShift, that does backups and if the system fails you can restore it using any Linux Mint Live USB with Timeshift on it. it works well.

Here's some of what motivates me that I learnt in my life: So long as the world is working for profit instead of progress, our lives will all go backwards!

It's why I do what I do, I've not really ever had a job, was diagnosed AuDHD or some combination of a different brain to almost everyone I've met (in person). It sucked not knowing, had trouble with friends, school etc, I barley finished Grade 10 and I never did College etc. All my coding and computer skills are self taught. Finding out at the same time my life fell apart, let me forgive myself and move on from years of depression!

I got the Plymouth Theme done, just run LLStore and pick

LastOSLinux BootScreen Plymouth v1.02

I now set the theme the correct way, so it should persist for OS upgrades in my new builds, also you can reinstall it if it doesn't ;)

-EDIT-

Doing a v1.03 that removes the Ubuntu logo from Ubuntu based distro's as well as using only 2 animation frames as it had 34 and it loads each frame, so makes sense to only use 2 so that they buffer and don't slow boot by .01 second extra, or hammer a slow USB stick.

To think a year ago, I could barely use Linux, now I know my way around :D

Yes, I found version v1.03 and installed it.
Well, what can I say; it does exactly what it's supposed to do... Yingyang is back.

was diagnosed AuDHD or some combination of a different brain
In the past, people here in Germany used to say that someone had “Zappelphillip syndrome.” Then the pharmaceutical industry needed a name and invented the term ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or something similar... Then came the medications that treat this “disorder,” which isn't actually that bad (people are different, after all. You just have to deal with it). It's not easy, but that's the way the world is. These are challenges...

Ritalin, for example, brought in billions, and it's supposed to be given to children? Because their parents can't cope? Hmm, very questionable, the whole thing...

Oops, I'm getting political again. Sorry, I promise to do better. (It just hurts me to see how children etc. are being used.

OK, and I've been in a wheelchair since 1982 because of a traffic accident that wasn't my fault. It's not bad, but it can be annoying sometimes... Especially now in winter with the snow and cold. That's why summer is mine. :)

Thats me:

you can have opinions here, we don't judge people, as i said, only 1 rule "respect each other", i grew up watching george carlin as my educator, fell in love with standup comedy and realised that humour is best for discussing topics that may offend people, because it is sad that people expect you to hurt you, 1 up you or not want the best for you, just because you observe or discus an idea with them. we only want peace and prosperity here, that means you don't have to sensor your topics because if you focus on peace and progress then their can't be misunderstandings, even if english mightn't be a main language.

I am glad to see you smiling and that your mind isn't being wasted due to things out of your control. life's deck isn't fair, all you can do is learn and adapt to it all.

politics are also fine to discuss, so long as it's relevant and you share why you have an opinion. it should be educational, not just a statement that has no value or comes from a closed mind... nothing is absolute, so a belief is just a belief, it can change with new information ;)
